Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a nationally recognised programme that gives young people the opportunity to develop essential life skills, build confidence, and challenge themselves beyond the classroom.
At DGSB, the DofE forms a key part of our extra-curricular provision, offering students a rewarding journey of personal growth through volunteering, physical activity, and adventurous experiences. Participation not only enriches students’ school life, but also helps them stand out in further education and future employment.
We are proud to offer all three levels of the award—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—allowing students to progressively build their skills and achievements over time. Students begin the Bronze Award in Year 9, where they are introduced to the core elements of the programme and encouraged to try new activities. In Year 10, they can progress to the Silver Award, taking on greater responsibility and more advanced challenges. For our Sixth Form students, the Gold Award represents the highest level of the programme, requiring commitment, independence, and resilience, and culminating in a truly memorable expedition experience.
Through the DofE, students take part in four key sections: volunteering, physical, skills, and expedition (with an additional residential section at Gold level). Whether they are supporting their local community, learning a new skill, improving their fitness, or navigating the outdoors, students gain invaluable experiences that foster teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. The sense of achievement that comes from completing a DofE Award is significant, and we are committed to supporting our students every step of the way as they take on this exciting and rewarding challenge.
