Maths Success

Posted on: 10/11/2022

DGSB Sixth Form Maths and Further Maths students have enjoyed great success in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge this year. This is a very challenging exam which stretches pupils’ problem-solving skills, challenging their mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. We were delighted to see such strong results, with over 60% of the pupils achieving a certificate at the Bronze level or above.

Particular praise must go to two of our year 13 pupils, Joe D. and Alex L., who each scored a Gold certificate, and have qualified for the follow-on rounds.

Joe has been invited to compete in the prestigious Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo exam.

Alex, who has also taken the prize for the highest score in the school, has qualified for the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad; this means that Alex ranks amongst the top 1000 scorers across the country. This is truly remarkable achievement, and we are very excited to see how he gets on in this gruelling three-and-a-half hour exam next week.

"The Maths Department is incredibly proud of the success that our pupils have achieved in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge this year and wish the best of luck to Joe and Alex for the follow-up rounds."  Mrs Scarpitta, Maths Teacher.
